Did anyone ever grow up with close cousins who helped each other like I did? Even as adults cousins will help each other just because they can. When we needed our hair braided who did we call? When we needed help with homework, who did we call? That’s right, I called my cousins and my cousins called me. We went out on the town together. We celebrated birthdays together. We even helped each other after we grew up and had children of our own and they grew up together too! What if that same collaborative attitude could be transferred to other groups within the Black community? What if women and men who needed help could call on each other when they need help and teach each other how to complete projects and get things done properly by sharing information, skills, and technology? I would refer to this type of comradery as the Cousins Theory.
I wonder if it possible for my Cousins Theory to get traction within the Black community? Is it something that could work? Is it even possible? What could it hurt? Don’t you think, it is worth giving it a try?
